A Review of Energy and Sustainability KPI-Based Monitoring and Control Methodologies on WWTPs

Humanity faces serious problems related to water supply, which will be aggravated by population growth. The used in human activities must treated make it available again without posing risks health and the environment. In this context, Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) have gained importance. treatment process WWTPs is complex, consisting of several stages, consume considerable amounts resources, mainly electrical energy. Minimizing such energy consumption while satisfying quality environmental requirements essential, but a challenging task due complexity processes carried out WWTPs. One form evaluating performance through well-known Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs are numerical indicators performance, being simple common way assess efficiency eco-efficiency process. By applying WWTPs, techniques for monitoring, predicting, controlling, optimizing can created or improved. However, use computational methodologies that (KPIs-based methodologies) still limited. This paper provides literature review current state-of-the-art KPI-based monitor, control optimize paper, studies presented on 21 papers identified, assessed synthesized, 12 monitoring predicting problems, 9 optimization problems. Future research directions relating unresolved also identified discussed.
